Smart Fit One-size Diaper Cover

What makes the Smart Fit Diaper cover different from other one-size covers on the market? We are so glad so many of you are asking this question! The Smart Fit Cover is the only diaper cover in the world that adjusts to go from extra small to extra large and also expands from narrow to wide avoiding the all too common problem other covers present of having a very wide crotch when using the cover on a tiny baby. To see this demonstrated click here to check out our video tutorial!

Cloth Diaper Safe Detergents

One of the most popular questions we get here at Smartipants is "What kind of detergent should I use?"
The answer depends on several factors such as your water type, whether your baby has any allergies or sensitivities and your own preferences.
We prefer clean rinsing detergents, the use of hot water and hanging to dry whenever possible to prolong the life of the diapers and get them as clean as possible.
There are many detergents that are not safe for cloth and you can find that list here https://www.smartipants.com/faq#6There are others that we can recommend as safe to use with cloth diapers and you can see those here http://www.youtube.com/thesmartipants#p/a/u/1/IDb3CSsdZoM
Whichever you choose remember that it is important to choose the brand that works best for you and to avoid whiteners, brighteners, and softeners. Also avoid natural soaps as they will leave a film on your diapers.

Diaper a Day Giveaway Day 6!

Congratulations to Rachel Leslie our Day 5 winner!
About her first experience with cloth diapers Rachel says: "My first experience was with a borrowed set of prefolds and covers from a very good friend. She knew I was interested and was the one who got me started. My little girl was 6 months old. The first time we put the diaper on her I loved it, I felt like i was doing something good for my baby, our family and the environment. Nothing went wrong that first day, but the next day she had a terrible diaper rash. We got our own set of cloth diapers and found that she cannot use prefolds. A year later and look at me now, who would have known. Cloth diapering has changed my whole life in many ways."

Day 6: Today's entries are a little different. Leave a review for Smartipants at any cloth diaper review site. On our facebook fan page there is even a review section. We'd love for you to share with other parents learning about cloth diapers why Smartipants is a great choice. Then comment here with a link to your review. If you have already reviewed us online post the link for your entry.
Good Luck!

Diaper a Day Giveaway Day 5!

Congratulations to Hilary our day 4 winner who says in regards to going green, "We steam-mop our floors (no chemicals), we use cloth grocery bags, we recycle, we re-use plastic containers (i.e. sandwich meat, etc), we try to line dry as many things as possible, we try to conserve energy usage."

Question for Day 5 Giveaway:

Share your first cloth diapering experience.

Just for fun I'll share mine. I had my baby who was a couple of weeks old and my diaper stash consisted of a few prefolds with pins and plastic pants. I didn't know any of the fancy folds like the jellyroll back then so the fit wasn't great but got it pinned on and under the plastic pants who could tell. I remember matching up my sets of dritz pins so I would only use a matching set with each change. I remember feeling so proud of that first diaper. I was terrified that I would poke the baby and those dritz pins were SHARP! I got myself a few times but never the baby so I was happy about that. Eventually I loved using prefolds and pins but ultimately I developed a much more modern easy to use and inexpensive system which has evolved into Smartipants today!

How often do I need to change my baby?

We get this question a lot from new parents and often the question is regarding cloth diapers. The truth is that babies should be changed every 2 hours or so or whenever you notice the diaper is wet or soiled no matter what type of diapers you use.
We recommend changing every 2-3 hours during the day and during the night whenever your baby wakes. If your baby sleeps through the night make sure the diaper is fitted snugly but comfortably and that the absorbency is adequate to get baby through the night. Hemp inserts can be a wonderful addition to your diapers at night to increase absorbency due to their ability to hold a lot of fluid and are great for heavy daytime wetters as well. Place it just behind your microfiber insert in your smartipants for a night combo many of our customers swear by.

If you choose disposable diapers you still should change this often to keep your baby clean, dry and comfortable.

If you prefer to use a barrier cream or diaper ointment at each diaper change we recommend a light layer of aquaphor healing ointment.

Top 5 recommended detergents for cloth diapers

It's hard to recommend detergents because different people have different washers, different types of water and different diapers. Here are the top 5 recommended by users of Smartipants in no particular order.
Customers have been happy with the following detergents, not every brand works for every family, and not all detergents are available in all areas. Many are available online. The key is to find what works for you!
Again- these are user recommended brands to try if you don't know where to start

Rockin Green
Country Save
Tide Free
All Free and Clear
Charlie's Soap

Simple Way to Strip Cloth Diapers

If you experience leaks or your cloth diapers are stinky you might need to strip your diapers. But how? This is the simplest method and works for most.
Turn up your water heater or boil water on your stove to add to your washer. You need HOT water to strip residue from your diapers.
Add your clean diapers to your washer and add the hot water if you boiled it otherwise turn on the machine. You can add a few drops of Dawn dishsoap which can break up residue to the wash.
Set your machine for a hot wash and extra rinse.
Wash the entire load again with no detergent, no soap, just water with an extra rinse. Watch this wash to see if you see any bubbles. If you see bubbles you'll need to rinse until you don't. If you see no bubbles you can dry the diapers.

If you try this method and you still have diapers that are stinky especially when wet, you may need to scrub the lining of your diapers with a nail brush or an old toothbrush and dishsoap to get the residue out.

If you've tried both methods and you still have issues then I recommend adding 1/4 cup of bleach to your next load of diapers. You can do this about once per month if you have issues with stinky diapers. Using bleach too often can wear your diapers out faster than normal, so use sparingly and only when necessary.
Make sure if the diapers smell dirty, not just like amonia that you are using enough detergent to get them really clean. Your inserts can be bleached every other week or so separately from your diapers.
Remember not to use fabric softeners at all!
